Moving checklist
A move goes better with a plan. This checklist shows what to do and when, from the first weeks to moving day.
8 weeks before
- Set your moving date and, if you rent, check the notice period in your lease
- Get at least three written quotes from movers
- For an interstate move, look up each mover's USDOT number on the FMCSA website
- Make a list of large furniture and items that need care
- Decide what to sell, donate or throw away
4 weeks before
- Book your mover and get the date, estimate and type of estimate in writing
- Book the elevator and a loading zone with your building, and ask if it needs a certificate of insurance
- Order boxes, tape and bubble wrap
- Book storage if your new home is not ready
- Start packing things you don't use every day
1 to 2 weeks before
- Change your address with USPS (online or at a post office)
- Set up or move electricity, gas, water, internet and trash service
- Update your address with your bank, employer, insurance and doctor
- Plan your DMV address change: many states ask for it within a few weeks of a move
- Pack a box with essentials: chargers, toiletries, medicine, bedding and a few tools
On moving day
- Read the bill of lading and the inventory before you sign
- Keep keys, documents and valuables with you
- Check every room, closet, the attic and the garage before the truck leaves
- Show the crew which room each box goes in
- Note any damage on the paperwork straight away and take photos
Signs of a moving scam
- A very low quote by phone without seeing your things
- A large cash deposit before the move
- No USDOT number, or a number that belongs to another company
- No written estimate, or a contract with blank spaces
- A truck without a company name
Frequently asked questions
How far ahead should I book movers?
Four to eight weeks ahead is usual. For a summer move or the end of the month, book even earlier.
How do I check a moving company?
For an interstate move, look up the company's USDOT number on the FMCSA website. For any mover, read recent reviews, ask for a written estimate and check that they are insured.
When should I change my address?
About one to two weeks before you move. USPS can forward your mail, and you should also update your bank, employer, insurance and the DMV.
